FAQ

Food Information

What are your quality control standards and who manufacturers your food?

We have two major co-packers who help us produce our canned formulas here at Dave's Pet Food. One co-packer is based in the United States and one co-packer is based in Thailand. Our American based co-packer is the leading North-American private label manufacturer of wet pet food. Our Thailand co-packer is a leader in sustainability and safe-fishing techniques. They're a dolphin-free facility and 100% of the sourced seafood and tuna is traceable back to the vessel or farm. Both have stringent processes in place to make sure their ingredients are meeting the highest quality standards. They produce all of Dave’s Pet Food in their own facilities in the following locations: USA, Canada, and Thailand. All materials and vendors go through a strict qualification process. Each facility tests all ingredients before using them to ensure nutritional and food safety parameters are met. Additionally, they have strict protocols in place to confirm microbiological safety, nutritional compliance, and shelf stability of finished goods.

Are your foods made in the USA? Where are your ingredients sourced?

Whenever possible, we source ingredients from the USA. But, as all manufacturers do, some of our ingredients are sourced from Canada, Thailand (our tuna), New Zealand, and Australia (our lamb). We do NOT use ingredients from China with the exception of our vitamin packs.

Our vitamin packs are imported from China, as this is the only place in the world that supplies them.

The company we source our flavors from in Thailand is a leader in sustainability and safe fishing techniques. Rest assured, many of the highest-quality pet foods (and people foods) are made in Thailand.

Is your meat human-grade? What is it free of?

Once any meat enters a pet food facility, it can no longer be considered human-grade. Our meat, however, is not “rendered”. The material must be free of canine or feline origin materials, pesticides, antibiotics, and hormone residues. It must also be free of any dead, dying, disabled, or diseased animals and must be in full compliance with US 21 CFR Part 109 & 509.

Dave's Phosphorus Chicken Crumble for dogs is made in a food grade kitchen, with pet food ingredients.

Why are some of your Restricted Diet Foods intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only?

Our Restricted Diet formulas are intended for intermittent and supplemental feeding only. The low levels of magnesium and phosphorous in the food do not meet The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) requirements for healthy adult maintenance. We only recommend using these foods if your pet is having an issue that requires them to be on a low, restricted diet. Once (and if) the issue resolves, you will want to switch back to a regular maintenance diet. If the issue is chronic, it is okay to maintain the diet. As always, we recommend speaking with your veterinarian concerning feeding guidelines when your pet is challenged by health issues.

What is the “Natural Flavor” in some of your foods?

Depending on the product you’re referring to, the natural flavor can vary. Dextrose is the
source of “Natural Flavor” in our canned food formulas. Dextrose acts as an energy source, a texturizer, sweetener, and a flavor enhancer. Frequently found in pet food and feed specialties, it’s readily usable by dog and cat systems.

Other common “Natural Flavors” we use include 1. liquid smoke (wood is smoked and its
aromatics are made into a liquid form which provides the smokey flavor) 2. Pork or chicken palatant (palatant improves the taste of food, and is liver-based—so there’s no lean-muscle tissue).

Do your cans contain BPA in the lining? Are they recyclable?

We’re proud to announce that our cans are BPA-free and recyclable.

How long are opened cans good for in the refrigerator?

When stored in an airtight container, opened cans are good for up to 5 days. Please keep in mind that if air permeates the food it can spoil much faster.

Which other brands can Dave’s Restricted Diet be compared to?

Dave’s Restricted Diet Phosphorus Canned Cat Food is comparable to Hills® Prescription Diet® k/d® Feline.

Dave’s Restricted Diet Magnesium Canned Cat Food is comparable to Hills® Prescription Diet® i/d® Feline.

For digestive issues, try Dave’s Restricted Bland Diets.

If for any reason your pet does not absolutely love their Dave's Pet Food, you may return unused cans from full case purchases within 30 days for a refund. Sale items and opened bags are excluded and cannot be returned or refunded. Shipping charges are not refundable. Returned cans and unopened bags must arrive intact, without damage and in resellable condition for the refund to be issued. You are responsible for return shipping costs if you are returning the food (unless cans are damaged in any way upon arrival.) Returns for less than full cases of cans are pro-rated based on the number of cans returned. For returns please call us at (888) 763-2738 or email us at office@davespetfood.com

We strive to minimize dented cans during the shipping process. However, there are occasions where you may receive a dented can or cans. Cans with minor dents and all seals intact do not compromise the food and do not require replacement. If you receive a dented can that is broken, food is exposed or the can is leaking, we are happy to credit you for those cans.

It is our goal to make sure you and your pet are completely satisfied every time you purchase food from DPF!

What Does As-fed & Dry-Matter Basis Mean?

All formulas contain some moisture in practical feeding situations. The amount of moisture directly affects its nutrient content.

As-fed refers to the formulas as it is normally fed - moisture and all.

Dry-matter refers to the loaf, moisture removed.

The values shown on the charts below are an average percentage of nutrients based upon all production runs. Values show what percentage of the nutrient is contained within the can. Values on the can may appear differently, as AAFCO requires us to list minimum & maximum percentages ONLY.

If you need help understanding or converting the values, you can reach out to our free, on-hand vet at (833) 386-9249.
